HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It can transmit high-quality video and audio data between devices. If your devices, such as a monitor or HDTV and a computer, have HDMI ports, you can connect them together using a HDMI cable.
But sometimes it is possible that your HDMI ports fail to work — the port on your computer cannot detect your TV or monitor or vice versa. If you are in this situation, you can try the methods below. They can help you fix your HDMI port not working issue.
2) Update or reinstall graphics driver
3) Restart and reconnect your devices
4) Troubleshoot hardware issues

1) Configure display setting
If you are using multiple monitors, you can solve your HDMI port not working issue by configuring display setting on your computer. That means you need to configure how to display your computer with multiple screens.
First, you need to press Windows logo key and P key on your keyboard at the same time. A list of display modes will appear.
The difference between each mode is as follows:
- PC screen/Computer only — Only using the first monitor.
- Duplicate — Displaying the same content on both monitors.
- Extend — Using both monitors to display an extended desktop.
- Second screen/Projector only — Only using the second monitor.
Here you can try Duplicate, Extend or Second screen/Projector and see if the any of these modes can help project your computer to your monitor or TV via HDMI.
2) Update or reinstall graphics driver
HDMI port not working issue can also result from faulty and incompatible graphics driver. You need to update or reinstall the driver of your graphics adapter to fix problems of this kind. There are two options for you to update your driver:
Option 1: You can do it manually. Uninstall the graphics driver on your computer. Then go to the official website of its manufacturer and download the graphics driver. After that install it on your computer. Note that you should make sure you find the correct website and download the driver suitable for your operating system.
Option 2: You can update your driver automatically with Driver Easy.
Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing.
You can download and install your drivers by using either Free or Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes only 2 clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):
a) Download and Install Driver Easy.
b) Run Driver Easy and hit Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.
c) Click on the Update button next to your graphics adapter to download the latest and correct driver for this device. You can also hit Update All button at the bottom right to automatically update all outdated or missing drivers on your computer (this requires the Pro version — you will be prompted to upgrade when you click on Update All).
Apart from updating driver, you can also use Driver Easy to uninstall driver (also Pro required). This is helpful especially when you want to reinstall the driver of a device.
a) Open Driver Easy and select Tools.
b) Select Driver Uninstall and you will see a list of device drivers. Locate your graphics driver and then click on the Uninstall button. The driver you select will be removed soon.
3) Restart and reconnect your devices
Sometimes restarting and reconnecting your devices is an effective method to solve your HDMI port not working issue. It is recommended that you give this a try.
a) Disconnect all your HDMI connection.
b) Shut down all your devices (your computer and monitor or TV) completely and unplug their power cables (and battery if you are using a laptop).
c) Leave them for a couple of minutes.
d) Plug the power cables (and the battery) back.
e) Connect the HDMI cables back to your devices.
f) Power on the devices.
Now you can see if your HDMI port gets back to normal.
4) Troubleshoot hardware issue
In some cases, there is something wrong with your HDMI port, cable or your devices. This can result in your HDMI port not working issue. You may need to have a basic check on them and see where is the trouble coming from.
You can replace the HDMI cable with a new one. If the cable is the cause the problem will resolves.
If changing the cable does not work, you can test with another TV or monitor or with another computer. Once you find out there is trouble with any of your devices, you may need to have it repaired or replaced.
If your devices are still under warranty, it is recommended that you contact the manufacturer. They can offer you further assistance to find out where the problem is and tackle issues that you cannot deal with on your own.
