AMAZON’S Echo continues to dominate thesmart speaker market but Apple could be looking to fight back with a new, and much cheaper,HomePod.
Apple could be about to launch a fresh attackon the Amazon Echo with latest rumours suggesting a lower priced HomePod might be coming soon.
According to a supply chain source in Taiwan,Apple is allegedly in talks to create a smart speaker with a much lower cost.
In fact, this next generation speaker maybe priced as little as £145, making it only just more expensive than Amazon’s highlysuccessful Echo.
Apple's current HomePod costs £319 and isone of the most expensive smart speakers on the market right now.
Another rumour to come from the source isthat Apple will use the famous Beats branding on this new device.
Apple purchased Beats back in 2014 and manyhave wondered why more of its devices don’t carry this popular name.
However, although this may sound like an excitingproposition for Apple fans this rumour should be believed with caution.
While it’s highly likely that a cheaperHomePod could be on the way it would be an odd decision to turn it into a Beats speaker.
This would be hugely confusing for the HomePodbrand and wouldn’t make a huge amount of sense.
Time will tell if this news becomes a realitybut it comes as Amazon's true dominance has been revealed.
Recent figures from market research firm StrategyAnalytics estimate that Amazon took a 43.
6 per cent share of the smart speaker marketwith four million unit sales.
Google was in second place with 26.
5 per centand just over two million sales of its Home and Home Mini devices.
Although not confirmed, Apple is thought tohave sold around 600,000 HomePods in the first quarter of 2018 although it's worth rememberingthat, after a delay to its original launch, this device only went on sale in February.
